Why is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

It’s close to springtime, and you’ll want to ensure that your air conditioner is up to the task of cooling your home for the next several months. To that end, you can tackle the following small jobs.

Replace the Air Filter

Every homeowner should at least replace the air filter. It’s usually located in the indoor air handler or return vent. A dirty air filter can wear out an AC by making it struggle harder to circulate the air. Every three months is the recommended frequency for filter replacement, but you’ll have to do it more often if someone in your home smokes or if your family has pets.

Move Obstructions From the Vents

Maybe you’ve positioned the furniture in such a way that it sometimes blocks a wall or floor vent. While this may enhance the aesthetics of a space, it does nothing to help keep the air in it comfortable, and it certainly does your AC no favors. Any obstruction of the airflow will put unnecessary pressure on the equipment, especially the motor.

Clean the Compressor Unit

It’s not just blockages inside that cause problems. Dust, dirt, and fallen leaves can create an obstruction in the compressor unit outdoors. The coil inside this unit needs to stay clean so that it can efficiently get rid of the heat that’s being transferred from your home. When you schedule regular maintenance for your system, the HVAC technician will clean the compressor unit.

Address Any Unusual Odors or Noises

Air conditioners will often inform you that something is wrong by making loud, continual noises. If there’s mold or mildew growth, you might notice bad odors. Before you start depending on this device routinely, put it through a test run while the weather is still pleasant. Check for these and any other problems while there’s still time to deal with them.
