Energy Consumption in Spokane, Washington

When your Spokane, WA, home needs a new air conditioning system, you’ll have a lot of considerations to keep in mind, and energy and cost efficiency are sure to be chief among them. The more watts that air conditioners use, the higher your electricity bill. It’s also important to choose an air conditioner with the right amount of watts to effectively cool your home.

Window and Portable Air Conditioning Units

Window and small, room-size portable air conditioning units use 500 to 900 watts of power. The units sized for a room up to 400 square feet use around 500 watts while those sized for larger rooms and studio apartments use closer to 900 watts of power.

Central Air Conditioners: Fan Only

Central air conditioning systems have an option for running just the fan. You can choose the fan setting on your programmable or smart thermostat. The coolant won’t cycle through the system on this setting. The fan runs, which circulates the air and filters it, which is enough to cool a room when the temperature is fairly mild. This setting requires about 750 watts of power.

Central Air Conditioners: Cooling Function

When your central air conditioning system is operating on its cooling cycle function, it uses between 3,000 and 4,000 watts of power. If you have a home that’s larger than 4,000 square feet, you may have a larger air conditioner or two medium-sized air conditioning systems. The cooling cycles use more electricity because the motors and fans require more power. The compressor also uses electricity in order to change the state and pressure of the chemical refrigerant that absorbs heat and transfers heat energy out of your home.
